On occasion, we receive emails from avid readers asking about specific plans for the Nissan Leaf rollout process. Up until now, responses have been limited to the somewhat vague information that Nissan has revealed thus far. Paraphrasing the words of Nissan, we offer up a response that goes something like this: if you live in the early release markets of California, Washington, Oregon, Arizona or Tennessee, then your chance to buy the Leaf will come by year's end. If, on the other hand, you reside in Hawaii, Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Orlando, Vancouver or Washington, D.C., then the Leaf should be headed your way in early 2011.
For the rest of us, Nissan has said that our time will come sometime in 2012. For those of us waiting to snatch up a Leaf, 2012 consists of 12 agonizingly long months. Now, before you get discouraged and consider jumping ship, we have some good news. Mark Perry, Nissan's director of product planning, recently spoke with the guys at Nissan-Leaf and told them the Leaf "will be on sale nationwide by the end of 2011." Production numbers may be limited, but whether you live in Fargo, ND, Spooners Mill, ME, or anywhere else in the U.S., the Leaf should reach your area by the end of 2011. If your hometown is farther north, as in somewhere in Canada, then you will have to wait until the first quarter of 2012 to get behind the wheel of the Leaf. Hopefully, Nissan will release detailed rollout information soon, but at least we now know that 2011 is the year of the Leaf for the U.S.
